Macron is taking a gamble

Macron announcing its plans on French national television

What Happened
Emmanuel Macron has dissolved the French Parliament after his party's significant loss to the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) party in the recent EU Elections. The dissolvement of the parliament means one thing: new elections are coming soon, with the first round scheduled for June 30 and the second round a week later on July 7. Although Macron's own job is not on the line in these parliamentary elections, the results could largely shape the last three years of his presidency.

Why It Matters

  • It is an interesting tactic, calling for elections in a place of weakness. Especially, when Macron could just have pushed ahead with the current parliament until the presidential elections in 2027.

  • If RN gains a majority, Macron may be forced to work with a prime minister who opposes his agenda.

  • It might suggest that Macron thinks that the chances of reducing the popularity of RN are larger when they actually need to govern than when they are just a protest party on the sideline.

  • The decision of Macron was also felt on the French and European stock markets. The CAC, the French Index, fell by 1.4% on Monday. As investors around the world reacted on the fact the Macron might need to work with a parliament governed by RN.

What’s Next
A short and snappy election, that's for sure. And the rest of Europe will be watching the results in France closely. Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, stated that he will not call an election after his party also lost to the German equivalent of RN, Alternative fĂźr Deutschland. He and other European leaders might be very interested to see how Macron's tactic develops, as until now, no one has been able to effectively slow the growth of the far-right.
