WIKILEAKS
After 14 years, the WikiLeaks Saga is finally over

What Happened
Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, was freed yesterday after pleading guilty to one indictment under the US Espionage Act. The story of Julian Assange is a long one. In 2010, he was indicted for breaching the Espionage Act when releasing classified Pentagon documents. Fleeing prosecution, he fled to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in 2012, where he stayed for 7 years, after which he was ejected by the Ecuadorian Government. He was arrested in the UK and was awaiting trial for extradition to the US. He is convicted of 62 months in prison, which is deemed served.
Why It Matters
The accusation of Assange mostly stems from the release of classified Pentagon documents, but also the release of hundreds of emails of the Democratic Party in the US during the 2016 election, which caused embarrassment for both the party and their candidate, Hilary Clinton.
It is the first time a journalist is convicted under the Espionage Act. Many human rights groups have deemed this as a great threat to the right to a free press and have pushed for Assange’s release.
President Biden earlier indicated that he wanted this matter resolved quickly to put it behind once and for all. After which, the process picked up speed.
What’s Next
Julian Assange is now on his way to Australia, where he will be reunited with family and friends. On the prospects of him returning to the activist journalism he did before, we cannot say just yet, but of course, chances are definitely there.
