Vladimir Putin went on a state visit this weekend to North Korea, where his friend, Kim Jong-un, was waiting on him with all the parade you can expect of two dictators meeting each other. And the two countries need each other more than ever. They sealed their friendship with a security pact, stating that the countries will assist each other in case of aggression towards one of them.

Why It Matters

• The agreement shows the countries dependency on one another. North Korea provided Russia with a large amount of ammunition and missiles for Russia’s war in Ukraine, while North Korea could use Russia’s help for the development of its nuclear program.

• The security pact raises concerns among Western nations, as it could potentially lead to direct North Korean military involvement in the Ukraine war and further complicate efforts to curb Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

• Also, in Asia, this raises tensions, as over the past couple of weeks, North Korean soldiers have crossed the border of South Korea multiple times, leading to South Korea prompting warning shot.
