Nature restoration law passed, but not everyone agrees

What Happened
Yesterday, the EU passed the much disputed nature protection law, which will aim to restore 20% of the EU land and see by 2030. After months of deadlock, the change of heart by the Austrian climate minister ended this deadlock. But the change of heart can have far-reaching effects of for the law and the Austrian minister herself.
Why It Matters
The nature restoration law, a crucial pillar of the European Green Deal, has faced fierce opposition from farmers and far-right parties, leading to a watered-down version of the original proposal. The compromises made to secure its passage raise questions about the law's effectiveness in tackling the biodiversity crisis.
The change of heart might cause the Austrian national coalition to collapse. As the minister is taking actions that are in direct opposition to the policies the Austrian government, it is creating a significant amount of tension.
The Austrian far-right party already announced they will file criminal charges against the minister and aim to retract the Austrian vote on the matter
What’s Next
As member states begin the process of implementing the nature restoration law, they will likely face legal battles and ongoing resistance from farming lobbies and far-right parties. The Austrian Minister of Agriculture has already announced that it will fight for the approval of the law until the European Court of Justice. And if that not works, we’ll prepare for some farmers’ protests
